The Ascetic Works of Saint Basil: Author’s Preface and Introduction
W. K. L. Clarke
III. Vocabulary
The Rules, according to Garnier, are written in a Basilian style, but are not up to Basil’s usual standard of excellence. The modern reader will judge the style favourably for its simplicity. I have not thought it worth while to study the style or vocabulary of these documents for its own sake, but the following tables have been compiled in order to throw light upon problems of authenticity. The doubtful treatises are compared with the clearly authentic De Iudicio and De Fide.
