St Basil the Great, tr. Lowther Clarke, 1925
Rule 124: If by Chance a Man Finds Himself with Heretics or Heathen, Must He Eat with…
The Lord in no way forbade the common and general salutation, for He said: If ye salute your friends only what do ye more than others? Do not even the Gentiles thus?”2 But as for eating with them we have a command from the apostle, showing in whose case we must avoid it. ‘I wrote unto you in my epistle to have no company with fornicators; and not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world; but now I write unto you not to keep company, if any man that is named a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one, no, not to eat.”3
