St Basil the Great, tr. Lowther Clarke, 1925
Rule 237: What Manner of Soul is Directed by the Will of God?
That which has accepted the Lord’s proposition: “If a man cometh to me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”1 For if a man has not first succeeded in denying himself and taking up his cross, he finds as he goes many hindrances to following arising from himself.
Notes
- Mt. xvi. 24 conflated with Lk. xiv. 26 **.
