St Basil the Great, tr. Lowther Clarke, 1925

We must accept this as spoken in a special and primary way to priests, for it is written: Ye shall be called priests of the Lord, all of you ministers of God”’3; and ‘“A sacrifice of praise shall glorify me4; and again: A sacrifice to the Lord is a troubled spirit.”5 And the apostle says: “That ye offer your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”6 All these things are common to all, and it is necessary that each of us should fulfil them.
