Book 4, 38. Of the Kings of Spain
I return now to my history. On the death of King Athanagild in Spain, Leuvigild his brother succeeded to the throne.1 Upon the death of Leuva, Leuvigild took possession of the whole kingdom.2 His wife dying, he took in marriage Gunthswinth,3 mother of Queen Brunhild, having already two sons by his first wife, one4 of whom was betrothed to the daughter of Sigibert,5 the other6 to the daughter of Hilperic.7 He divided the kingdom equally between them, putting to death all those whom it was the custom of the kings to slay, not leaving of them one single male.8
