Book 5, 13. How Mummolus Ravaged Limoges

Let me now return to my subject. King Chilperic sent his son Chlodovech to Tours. The prince, assembling an army, passed over into Touraine and Anjou, advancing as far as Saintes, which city he took. But Mummolus, patrician of King Guntram, passed with a great army into the territory of Limoges, and began hostilities against Desiderius, Chilperic’s duke. In this engagement there fell of his army five thousand men, and Desiderius himself hardly escaped by flight. The patrician Mummolus then returned through Auvergne, which was in many parts devastated by his troops. In this way he made his way across into Burgundy.
