St Gregory of Tours, tr. Dalton, 1927
Book 9, 26. Of the Death of Queen Ingoberg
In the fourteenth year of King Childebert,1 Queen Ingoberg, widow of Charibert,2 passed from this life, a woman of great prudence, and devoted to the religious life, constant in vigils, in prayers, and in the giving of alms. Warned of God, as is my belief, she sent messengers to me asking me to help her in that which she was now minded to do for the salvation of her soul. She waited my coming, that after consulting me she might cause to be put in writing all that she desired to have done. I went to her, of course; I found a woman who feared God. She received me kindly, summoned a notary, and after taking counsel with me, as I have said, left legacies to the cathedral of Tours and the church of the holy Martin, as well as to the cathedral of Le Mans. A few months afterwards she was suddenly taken ill, and passed away from this world, I believe in her seventieth year. By deeds of enfranchisement she freed many serfs. She left one daughter married to the son of a certain king in Kent.
