St Gregory of Tours, tr. Dalton, 1927

Book 1, 42. Of the Empire of Theodosius

The emperor Gratian, seeing the state left defenceless, made Theodosius his colleague in the empire. This Theodosius placed all his hope and confidence in the mercy of God. It was rather by vigils and prayers than by the sword that he held in check many nations, gave the state new strength, and made victorious entry into Constantinople.
