Book 1, 43. Of the Death of the Tyrant Maximin
Maximus, after oppressing the Britons under his tyranny and achieving victory, was created emperor by the soldiers. Establishing his residence at Trèves, he took the emperor Gratian by stratagem and put him to death. The blessed Martin, who was now a bishop, visited this Maximus. The aforesaid Theodosius, who had placed all his hope in God, assumed control of the whole empire in the place of Gratian, and afterwards, stayed upon the divine support, stripped Maximus of the imperial power and put him to death.
